Texas Attorney General Paxton is suing the manufacturers of acetaminophen, asserting the corporations hid alleged dangers that the medication created to children's neurological development.

The lawsuit follows four weeks after President Donald Trump promoted an unproven link between taking Tylenol - also known as acetaminophen - during pregnancy and autism spectrum disorder in offspring.

The attorney general is filing suit against the pharmaceutical giant, which once produced the drug, the exclusive pain medication recommended for expectant mothers, and the current manufacturer, which currently produces it.

In a statement, he said they "deceived the public by gaining financially from suffering and promoting medication without regard for the risks."

The manufacturer says there is lacking scientific proof connecting acetaminophen to autism.

"These corporations misled for generations, knowingly endangering countless individuals to boost earnings," Paxton, a Republican, said.

The manufacturer commented that it was "deeply concerned by the spread of false claims on the safety of acetaminophen and the possible consequences that could have on the health of US mothers and children."

On its online platform, Kenvue also said it had "consistently assessed the pertinent research and there is insufficient valid information that demonstrates a established connection between taking paracetamol and autism."

Groups speaking for physicians and health professionals share this view.

ACOG has declared acetaminophen - the main ingredient in Tylenol - is among limited choices for women during pregnancy to manage pain and fever, which can pose major wellness concerns if ignored.

"In more than two decades of studies on the consumption of acetaminophen in pregnancy, no reliable research has successfully concluded that the use of acetaminophen in any trimester of gestation results in neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring," the group said.

The court filing cites current declarations from the previous government in claiming the drug is potentially dangerous.

In recent weeks, the former president caused concern from public health officials when he told expectant mothers to "struggle intensely" not to consume Tylenol when unwell.

Federal regulators then released a statement that medical professionals should think about restricting the use of acetaminophen, while also stating that "a causal relationship" between the drug and autism in young ones has not been established.

Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, who supervises the Food and Drug Administration, had pledged in April to initiate "extensive scientific investigation" that would establish the source of autism spectrum disorder in a short period.

But specialists advised that discovering a unique factor of autism - thought by researchers to be the result of a complicated interplay of genetic and external influences - would prove challenging.

Autism is a type of enduring cognitive variation and condition that affects how persons perceive and interact with the world, and is recognized using medical professional evaluations.

In his court filing, Paxton - a Trump ally who is seeking the Senate - asserts Kenvue and J&J "willfully ignored and sought to suppress the science" around acetaminophen and autism.

This legal action attempts to require the corporations "remove any commercial messaging" that states Tylenol is reliable for women during pregnancy.

The Texas lawsuit parallels the concerns of a collection of parents of minors with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who filed suit against the producers of Tylenol in 2022.

Judicial authorities dismissed the legal action, declaring studies from the parents' expert witnesses was inconclusive.
