RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
