Experts Spot Kremlin Intimidation Campaign Against Tomahawk Use

The Kremlin is executing a psychological influence campaign of threats to prevent the US from providing long-range missiles to Kyiv, based on analysis from military analysts. A senior legislator remarked: “We know these weapons very well, how they fly, defensive countermeasures, we worked on them in Middle East operations, so there is nothing new. Those delivering them and the deploying forces will encounter difficulties … We will develop strategies to target those who oppose our interests.”

Ukraine's Counteroffensive Progress

Ukraine's military were imposing substantial damage in a counteroffensive in eastern Ukraine, the central battlefield, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on midweek. The Ukrainian president's account, following a communication with his top commander, contradicted the Russian president's address to high-ranking military personnel a day earlier in which he said Moscow's forces possessed the operational control in all frontline sectors.

According to analysis dated October's first week, defense researchers said Russia was experiencing substantial casualties, particularly from unmanned aerial vehicle assaults, in compensation of minor territorial gains. Kyiv's troops, Ukraine's leader reported, were “maintaining our defense along all other directions”, mentioning particularly the Kupiansk area, a heavily damaged city in Ukraine's northeast under heavy Russian assaults for an extended period.

Regional Situations

The regional governor in Ukraine's southern region of Kherson said Russian attacks on Wednesday killed three people in and around the urban center of the same name. The governor of Sumy region, on the northern frontier with neighboring Russia, said three individuals were killed in unmanned aerial strikes in different districts. Ukraine's air force said it intercepted or jammed 154 out of 183 offensive unmanned aircraft during the night.

An offensive strike significantly harmed a Ukrainian energy facility, officials reported on midweek. Two employees were injured in the attack, as reported by energy company officials. Officials offered minimal specifics, regarding the plant's location, but government officials said attacks targeted energy infrastructure in Ukraine's northern Chernihiv, the Kherson area and south-eastern Dnipropetrovsk regions.

Civilian Effects

In the northern Ukrainian city of the Shostka area, hit hard by the offensive operations against the electrical grid, local government has established temporary shelters where civilians are able to seek warmth, drink hot tea, power electronic devices and receive psychological support, according to local official.

Global Response

Ukraine's ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization on Wednesday called on European partners to increase acquisitions of US weapons for Ukrainian forces. “The situation isn't that we prefer US equipment instead of allied or some other European weapons – the challenge remains that we are asking the US for equipment that European nations are unable to supply,” said Ukraine's NATO envoy.

German federal police will soon be allowed to intercept unmanned aerial vehicles, security chief announced on midweek, after a spate of unmanned aircraft incidents believed to be Russian efforts to conduct surveillance and threaten. Unveiling a draft law, the representative said police would be authorized “to employ advanced technological measures against UAV risks, such as EMP technology, electronic interference, navigation system disruption, but also with physical means”.

European Security Challenges

European leader said on midweek that the European Union should ramp up its security measures to counter Russia's “hybrid warfare” after aerial violations, computer network operations and marine communications interference. “These aren't isolated incidents. It is a systematic and intensifying operation,” the leader said in a address before the EU legislative body. “A couple of events are isolated incidents, but three, five, ten – this is a planned and specific ambiguous warfare operation against the European Union, and Europe must respond.”

Humanitarian Status

The Swiss authorities has extended its temporary shelter provided to people fleeing Ukraine to at least 4 March 2027. Humanitarian status, which enables individuals to travel abroad as well as be employed in Switzerland, is typically restricted to twelve months but can be extended. “The ruling reflects the continued unstable environment and persistent Russian attacks across large parts of Ukraine,” said a federal announcement. “Regardless of global diplomatic initiatives, a lasting stabilisation that would permit protected homecoming is not expected in the coming years.”
