Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
